New Delhi, Oct 1: In a serious case of security concerns in
prisons, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) on Tuesday issued an alert that
the home-grown terror-outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM) may try to free
jailed operatives.
According to reports, the IB has issued alert to six jails across India. It has said that national capital's Tihar jail and jails in Mumbai, Pune an Jaipur are on IM's target. Today, in a major security lapse, seven convicts including six SIMI activists managed to escape from the Khandwa jail in Madhya Pradesh.
The seven prisoners reached the jail bathroom and stabbed the two security guards as they snatched their rifles. They then broke the wall of the bathroom and escaped. Last month in a similar incident, an IM operative Afzal Usmani escaped while he was being taken to MCOCA court from Taloja Jail along with 22 others by the Mumbai police.
Although, a massive manhunt was launched to nab Usmani, but he still remains at large. On one hand, the intelligence agencies, after a long hunt, caught two top IM operatives - Yasin Bhatkal and Abdul Karim Tunda and at the same time, the lack of security measures in prisons has raised a question mark over handling of terror suspects.
